Warning issued for using disposable barbecues in Jersey
People in Jersey are being reminded to remain conscious of fire safety after two incidents at the weekend, the fire service said. Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said some disposable barbecues "could have caused an issue" by not being put out have been rising and will continue to do so and Jersey Met has forecast 29C (84F) for Chief Fire Officer Bryn Coleman said he wanted islanders to "take care" when using equipment involving fire at the beach.
He said: "With all this hot weather around, I'd like people to bear in mind fire safety at this time. "The ground is really really dry at this moment in time and if we do get a fire it's likely to spread really, really rapidly."
Mr Coleman asked for people to choose sensible places to light a fire or disposable said: "Don't leave them near any flammable materials or any highly combustible materials such as gorse, such as hedgerows."Put them in a metal container, even pour seawater on them to make sure they're fully extinguished before you leave the beach area."Mr Coleman said the service had "very limited resources at this time of year".He said: "If you do see a fire, please immediately phone 999, don't attempt to tackle the fire yourselves and get us out - we will deal with the fire."Please be careful so this is not an additional drain on our resources."
